Co-curated with Singapore Science Park and organised by OuterEdit as a district activation of Singapore Design Week, REINVENTION was the first of its kind at Singapore Science Park, bringing together science, design, technology, and nature as interconnected forces shaping the future of our cities, communities, and industries.
Conceived as more than a festival, REINVENTION became an open platform for exchange. It invited scientists, researchers, designers, technologists, creatives, institutions, and the wider public to come together in the spirit of curiosity, experimentation, and shared discovery.
The Spirit of Reinvention as a Starting Point
Before shaping the festival experience, we first needed to establish the overall strategic narrative and curatorial lens of the design district. This meant deepening what reinvention could mean for us, for Singapore Science Park, for the design sector, and for Singapore as a whole.
At its heart, the festival celebrated the reinventive spirit, reminding us that innovation is not always about chasing the next shiny new thing, but it could also be about seeing the familiar through fresh perspectives – uncovering the value already around us and imagining how it can be transformed for what comes next.
Anchored in Singapore Science Park’s identity as a place of technology, research, and enterprise, the festival also reflected a wider national narrative that embodies that same spirit. One that brings forth values of innovation, resilience, and progress in Singapore as our nation celebrated its 60th year. Through this lens, Reinvention then became both a theme and a way of thinking. It asked how science and design, when brought together, can drive meaningful change in the way we think about materials, reimagine systems, build future-ready environments, and shape the world we want to live in.
A Cross-pollination of Industries, Disciplines and Ideas
The strength of REINVENTION lay in collaboration. Working closely with Singapore Science Park, we drew from both our networks to curate a multidisciplinary festival that cut across science, technology, innovation, design, sustainability, wellness, food, nature, and community.
This collaborative process became the project itself. As more partners came onboard, the festival grew in diversity, scale, and texture. What emerged was not a singular showcase but a layered platform of voices, representing the breadth of Singapore’s science, design, and innovation ecosystem.
The programme brought together over 108 partners, spanning communities within and beyond Singapore Science Park. From food tech, health tech, robotics, and medical innovation to creative technology, local heritage, future living, wellness, and sustainability, the festival created unexpected intersections between industries, disciplines, and audiences.

Making Innovation feel Tangible, Accessible, and Human
We were mindful of the many needs, interests, and expectations of our visitors and partners, and with a festival of this scale and diversity, the experience had to feel open and accessible while still being thoughtfully planned and cohesive.
Design thinking played an integral role in world-building for the design district. This became key in helping us consider how the wide range of audiences would move through, encounter, and engage with the festival, from thought leaders, industry experts, and partners to families, students, creatives, and the wider public.
Taking on the format of a festival allowed the programme to be open and varied while still held together by a clear curatorial spirit. What could have been a conventional trade fair or innovation showcase was instead reimagined as an immersive, lived experience — one that made science, technology, and design feel more accessible, engaging, and human.

A key programme highlight was the OPEN SOURCE conference, which served as the festival's flagship design dialogue series. Celebrating the spirit of open-sourcing, the series championed the idea that knowledge, ideas, and processes are meant to be shared, adapted, and scaled for the common good.
Across a rich line-up of talks and conversations, OPEN SOURCE brought together designers, scientists, technologists, industry leaders, and emerging voices to explore how we might reinvent smarter, healthier, and more human-centred futures.
We were proud to welcome an incredible breadth of voices to the stage: from CapitaLand Development’s joint panel with Bjarke Ingels Group, Mario Cucinella Architects, and Safdie Architects – the creative minds behind Jewel Changi Airport – to Never Too Small’s first official debut at Singapore Design Week! The programme also spotlighted some of Singapore’s brightest minds in medtech, alongside tertiary institutions and community-led sessions exploring design impact across local identity, robotics, creativity, future living, and beyond.

The conference was held at the REINVENTION Stage, the festival’s central gathering point and a physical expression of its values. Designed around sustainability and circularity, the stage is built with reusable metal scaffolding and cork panels. The stage seating was thoughtfully furnished with Mater pieces – kindly sponsored by CULT Design Asia – which are made from recycled materials such as coffee grounds, wood, and sugarcane.
After the event, the cork panels were distributed to partners and fabricators for a second life, ensuring that the build did not simply end with the festival. If you're keen to learn more, watch as Ryan and April bring you through the stage design here!
This spirit of resourcefulness extended across the festival grounds through Chapalang Structures, created in collaboration with Knock Knock Studio. The series reimagined salvaged debris as playful, functional structures, transforming discarded objects into 15 fresh forms. Blending function, humour, and material ingenuity, the works reflected the festival’s belief that reinvention can begin with what already exists.
Together, these design interventions shaped the festival’s spatial identity, embracing the “chapalang” nature of reinvention while still presenting a considered and cohesive festival experience.

The Response and Impact
Bringing together over 108 partners, 70 programmes, and 30 talks, REINVENTION was shaped by the generosity and diversity of the communities behind it. From robotics showcases and medical technology panels to student talks, creative technology activations, science-led exhibits, live experiments, and design showcases, REINVENTION created many points of connection around shared ideas and aspirations that made it accessible for visitors of all ages to be curious, participate, and imagine what the future could look like together.
The festival also welcomed a total of 21,707 visitors and garnered over 1,283,233 impressions through organic cross-marketing efforts with partners and collaborators. As part of Singapore Design Week 2025, the festival was also included in the programme's local and international media coverage, with mentions and features on Dezeen, and Monocle. For Singapore Science Park, this marked a meaningful first – extending the brand's presence beyond its district, and into wider regional and international design conversations.
Beyond a successful first edition, REINVENTION became an important milestone in Singapore Science Park's placemaking efforts – one that laid the foundation for future editions in the years to come. For us, it was a privilege to help bring this vision to life, and we are deeply grateful to the Singapore Science Park team for their trust, openness, and partnership throughout the journey!
