Making Room for Play and Possibility. How design, discovery and shared experiences invite us to think differently about play.
What might change if we made more room for play?
At Singapore Science Park, REINVENTION: ALLPLAY explores that question through interactive installations, creative workshops and community experiences. As a creative agency in Singapore, OuterEdit brings together storytelling, design and participation. Through ALLPLAY, we have seen people of different ages make, move, experiment and share their ideas.
The programme runs from 11 August to 22 November 2026. CapitaLand Development curates it in partnership with OuterEdit, with support from DesignSingapore Council. Together, more than 30 designers, artists and partners explore what play can make possible. Read the festival announcement.
ALLPLAY also featured in The Straits Times on 28 August. For everyone involved, it was a meaningful moment. It gave us a chance to share why play deserves more space in our lives.
Play as a mindset and a skill
Our starting point was simple: play gives us permission to explore before we know the answer.
In everyday life, we often feel pressure to arrive prepared, perform well and get things right. Yet play allows us to approach a situation with curiosity. We can test a possibility, change our minds and try again. As a result, an unexpected outcome can become something to learn from.
In his Straits Times interview, OuterEdit’s Founder and Executive Creative Director, Ryan Tan, described play as:
“a mindset, a capability” - Ryan Tan
The Straits Times
For us, these are skills worth practising throughout life. For example, play can help us consider different solutions or work through a problem with someone else. It also gives us a way to approach unfamiliar situations with greater openness.
So we keep returning to one question: how might we bring a greater sense of play into the way we work?

Different ways to discover play at PlayLab
At ALLPLAY, visitors can explore these ideas for themselves.
The opening PlayLab programme at The Canopy at Geneo followed five themes: Think, Make, Move, Experience and Connect. For example, PARKLAB’s Trellix Tower encouraged physical exploration. Meanwhile, CT-ART CREATION’s Rube Goldberg Miracle Machines invited visitors to experiment with chain reactions.
RE:PLAY by Just A Band Of Creatives offered further ways to explore. Visitors could also join workshops and discover a design market curated by OfWonderWander.
This range of experiences matters because people find their way into play differently. Some enjoy making things with their hands, while others respond to movement or a puzzling object. For others, joining a friend makes it easier to begin.
We want people to feel welcome to watch first, join in and find their own pace. Above all, we hope they discover something that sparks their curiosity. Explore the ALLPLAY programme.
Shared experiences at PlayCourt and PlayMission
Outside, PlayCourt brings the exploration to recreational spaces at 7 Science Park Drive. New interventions appear progressively through the season. Alongside a community mural, the programme explores fresh approaches to familiar games such as basketball and pickleball.
Meanwhile, PlayMission connects play with environmental learning. Mandai X’s Ranger Buddies: The Planet Cup combines physical activities with augmented-reality challenges. Through these experiences, families can explore how everyday choices affect the world around them.
The mural also offers a simple way to contribute. Each person can recognise their own mark and see how it sits alongside someone else’s. In this way, individual ideas become part of a shared artwork.
For us, this is one of the joys of community participation. People help shape the experience as they take part. Discover PlayCourt and PlayMission.

Creative placemaking at Singapore Science Park
These shared moments guide OuterEdit’s approach to placemaking strategy and spatial experience design.
We begin with people. What would help someone feel welcome? What might encourage them to stay, join in or return? By asking these questions, we can design experiences that help people build a relationship with a place.
ALLPLAY also builds on REINVENTION’s inaugural edition in 2025. For that edition, OuterEdit led the placemaking strategy, curatorial direction and spatial experience design. More than 100 partners came together across science, technology, design and community. Through Singapore Design Week, the programme introduced Singapore Science Park as a design district.
Since then, our partnership has continued to grow. It reflects our approach to festival curation and district activation: creating experiences and relationships that develop over time.
This year’s evolving format gives visitors fresh reasons to return. In turn, each visit offers another chance to connect with the district and its community. For OuterEdit, this is where creative placemaking and brand experience design meet. A destination’s identity takes shape through experiences people can join, enjoy and remember. Keeping the spirit of reinvention alive
There is a wider idea behind REINVENTION: the courage to begin while possibilities are still taking shape.
Reflecting on Singapore’s pioneers, Ryan spoke of:
“the willingness to begin without knowing exactly where the journey would lead” - Ryan Tan
The Straits Times
Singapore’s story gives us a way to think about this. Housing, healthcare, education and infrastructure all called for imagination as well as resolve. These familiar systems also remind us that people can shape the world around them.
For us, REINVENTION carries that same invitation. We hope it encourages people to question familiar approaches and contribute their own ideas. By making room for play, we can practise that willingness together.
We are grateful to Singapore Science Park, CapitaLand Development and DesignSingapore Council for their partnership and support. Our thanks also go to every collaborator, maker and play partner who helped bring ALLPLAY to life. Thank you to Lee Siew Hua and The Straits Times for the feature. Above all, thank you to everyone who came to play and made the experience their own.

Looking ahead to Singapore Design Biennale 2027
REINVENTION: ALLPLAY continues until 22 November 2026 at Geneo, Singapore Science Park. Admission is free, with selected programmes separately ticketed. Visit the official festival website for the latest details.
Beyond ALLPLAY, we look forward to REINVENTION returning to Singapore Science Park for the inaugural Singapore Design Biennale 2027. The Biennale takes place from 14 May to 20 June. Its theme, 1.35°N, draws on Singapore’s geographical latitude to explore how we might live, create and connect.
This next chapter offers a chance to deepen OuterEdit’s work in creative placemaking, festival curation and community engagement in Singapore. We also look forward to bringing more people, perspectives and disciplines together through design.
With each edition, we hope visitors leave with fresh ideas and new connections. Most of all, we hope they feel more able to help shape what comes next.
