Treading the line between Tradition and Modernity

Print & Media Association, Singapore - The Singapore Print Journal

Is print truly dead?

With the rapid surge of the digital age and social media, this question has been on many minds. However, organizations like the Print & Media Association, Singapore (PMAS) continue to demonstrate that print is far from obsolete. As the national representative body for the printing industry in Singapore, PMAS actively shares its wealth of knowledge and advocates for the enduring relevance of print.

This is further reflected in their bi-monthly publication where complimentary copies are given out, spotlighting the latest happenings and achievements within the print industry. With print inherently woven into our own studio practices, we are delighted to partner with PMAS to create their inaugural Singapore Print Journal, bringing curated print solutions worldwide.

Demystifying an Industry

Reviewing PMAS’ past publications, we were awed by the breadth and depth of the print industry’s transformation. Besides printing capabilities, the publications also delve into topics about the future forecast on packaging, materials and paper and act as a directory by listing local printing companies.

While PMAS is eager to share its wealth of knowledge with the community, we observed that the content might be tailored to a niche audience. For those who have yet to dip their toes into print, the journal’s content might be intimidating to read. This insight revealed an opportunity to transform the journal into more than just an informative tool. It could become a resource that could be proudly displayed and offer a satisfying reading experience, thereby broadening PMAS’ audience and reach.

To achieve this, we approached the project by reimagining the publication into a collectable art book, becoming a multi-functional resource that could be used for marketing in an elevated and dignified manner. Through this intentional shift, we hope to entice more readers to be excited by the possibilities of print, promoting further discussion and creative collaborations.

An Ode to the Printing Community

For the visual system, we were inspired by the print community. We devised a visual system featuring stylized variations of common motifs used in file preparation for printing.

Incorporating elements such as printer marks, colour bars, and registration marks, we sought to create moments of delight for those flipping through the pages. For newcomers to the print industry, the recurring motifs throughout the book serve to familiarise them with it, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Providing a Space for Sharing, Learning and Experimentation

Content-wise, we approached pagination with an editorial lens. Together with PMAS, we crafted a bespoke approach for each section, emphasising experimental formats that promote self-expression. The content includes powerful quotes about print’s adaptability, the history of PMAS, and think pieces from the creative community. These articles delve into technical aspects of printing, industry concerns like sustainability, and the complexities of digital technology.

The journal explores various facets of printing, providing a space for sharing, learning, and experimentation. Towards the end, we included a glossary of print-related terms and a comprehensive directory of print companies for users to contact for their future creative endeavours. Additionally, we purposefully included journaling pages at the back, inviting readers to annotate impactful passages or jot down their thoughts, further personalising their experience.

The Transformative Power of Print

The end result was a substantial publication that celebrates the dynamism of the print community. A significant number of copies were distributed during the PMAS International Print Congress, reaching suppliers and service providers in the printing industry, publishing companies, advertising agencies, government bodies, educational institutions, libraries, and overseas printing associations.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to PMAS and all the contributors who were involved for their support, dedication, passion, and expertise in bringing these pages to life.
